A walk on the wild side

The picture below looks a little odd, but shows one of Griff's new tricks, the first time we saw him do it last week...sucking his thumb. Check out that singular thumb in his mouth! One of his favorite things has been to suck and gnaw on his hands, attempting to stick one or both fists in his mouth and have at it. But until last Sunday, he hadn't figured out how to get separate fingers in there. He has been perfecting this skill all week and is really getting it down, on both hands, even! On a side note, he is holding his hair on the back of his head with his other hand. He has done this since he was born and I think he was doing it in utero, occasionally opening and closing his hand against the bottom of my uterus (when he was head down), causing me to flinch. Darrell, Griff, and I also went for a walk at Wilder State Park last Sunday. It was a wonderfully overcast fall day, great light for taking pictures and going for a walk along the coast in a cozy sweater and two wonderful guys. Griff was asleep for the first part of the walk, as you can see in the first picture...I almost died laughing at how silly this whole, cozy scene was with his little beanie over his eyes like an eye mask and his head just peeping out of his stroller blanket (thanks for the hand-me-down, Ayla!) Doesn't his face look like one from one of those Olmec Heads? Anyhow, we took the stroller off-roading, over really bumpy terrain and Griff snoozed away. It was only when the road smoothed out and we slowed down that he woke up, just in time to look over the cliffs at the cormorant colony. Griff stayed snuggly warm in his footed-pjs with the frog face on the butt (thanks for another great hand-me-down, Ayla!) And we shared loads of smooches with Griff after he woke up. A little further along the bluff, after Griff had filled his belly, he hung out with Darrell and checked out loads of interesting things along the way. Snuggled up with Pops. Darrell telling Griff about riparian plants and animals. Diaper break...these pics are to save for sharing during his teenage years, a family tradition...you know who you are ;-) Smelling a rose in the garden at the park. Check out the chooks! He really thought they were interesting. I have been taking him to see the neighbor's chickens fairly regularly ever since this intro.

He is so adorable, and I can't get over how much he looks like you, Valentine.

So funny because neither Darrell nor I really see ourselves or each other in him, well except maybe here http://theadventuresoflittlebug.blogspot.com/2009/08/like-father-like.html
But everyone else sees Darrell or I in him. I also can't imagine him as a newborn anymore nor can I really remember how tough pregnancy was. I guess it is all meant to make you have more...ingenious ;-)
