Fourth of July
The Fourth of July has always been associated with my big brother's birthday for me. Of course all of those fireworks and picnics are in his honor! But this year we were not with my brother, so we decided to seek out some wholesome fun while being back in time to keep our cat and our mutt soothed during the aforementioned fireworks.
I have never been particularly patriotic. Don't get me wrong, I feel fortunate to live in this country of incredible privilege. I just don't feel completely defined by being an American, I don't always feel proud of all of this country's history or current stances on issues, and there are many other countries that I feel are equally wonderful in a number of ways. I have never been one to fly a flag in front of my house or from my car, a habit that appears to be fairly uniquely American. BUT, for some reason, I could not help myself from putting Griff in this ensemble, a shirt handed down from the neighbor boys and a sweater knit by Griff's grandma. I think he looks exceedingly dapper and only wish this color combination was not as linked to so many flags!

We started out our Fourth of July with me riding to Harvey West Park with Griff in the bike trailer, to go watch Darrell cross the finish line at the Firecracker 10k run. Unfortunately we missed poppa coming across the finish line while we were helping a little crying boy with an incredible pout find his parents, but we had fun playing on the play structure in the park afterward. Griff applied the trick I taught him for getting off of the sofa to the slide, getting on him tummy and going feet first. You can see the impressive results in the video.

After cleaning up and eating , we headed out to the Swanton Pacific Railroad for Davenport Elementary's fundraiser picnic. Some of our friends were going to be there, Bill, Alli, and Savi, along with Kristen, Walt, and Quincy. It was a great time with loads of families having a picnic and old-fashioned tug-o-war, egg toss, sack races, and an enormous water-balloon fight. It was a wonderful way to spend the day and I think Griff liked it, despite his serious, teething expressions.
Savi, Griff, and Quincy...apparently the other parents had the same idea with the patriotic theme.

Griff finds the huge string of his dreams....but how will he get it into him mouth?

Here is a video of the epic waterballoon fight! They filled at least 6 wheelbarrows full of waterballoons and they went flying...
