Immunity

As with all parents, there are some traits that we hope that our kids get from one parent and traits that we hope are inherited from the other parent. With Darrell and I, there is one trait in particular that we hope Griff gets from his pop, his immune system. When Darrell gets a cold, (and in the 9 years I have known him, he has only had a handful, the guy just doesn't get sick) he thinks that his day to day and a half of headache and runny nose is the worst sickness. Ever. That same cold stays with me for two weeks or so, leaving me with the headache and stuffy nose, along with an incredibly sore throat, rough voice, nose about to fall off from so much blowing, and really tired. Poor Darrell, just doesn't understand what it is like to be sick with a nasty cold for a few weeks. He firmly believes that if you just make yourself sweat enough with soups and a hot shower followed with sweat pants and shirt that the cold will be gone the next day. This can be a bit maddening for those who a little sweating doesn't work for, but I do have a strong admiration for his immune system.
Mr. Never-gets-sick brought home a cold during the first week of school. This is unprecedented, and he washed his hands loads and stayed away from Griff and I to avoid giving it to us. Alas, the effort, although sweet and appreciated, was futile and Griff and I both woke up yesterday morning with stuffy noses. I don't know how Griff feels, but I have a very sore throat and a headache, no fever. We have both been sleeping a lot. Darrell tried to get us to sweat it out with the vaporizer running full steam in the bedroom, but we still have the cold this morning. Darrell claims that he got sick a lot as a child, so there is still some chance that Griff will express Darrell's immune system, fingers crossed! In the meantime, I was really hoping that this would not develop into a full-fledged cold since Darrell's dad, stepmom, and little sis are arriving from Plano this evening. You just can't plan it, can you...
In other news, I have been going into the lab a lot and getting loads of lab work done with Felicia. She just headed off for orientation at Stanford :-(, so things will move a little slower now. We will definitely miss her around here, but will see her on our trips over the hill to visit Griff's great grandpa Arnold.
Griff has discovered his fists and loves to chew and suck on them, more and more. He has been practicing his smile and coo, particularly while he is nursing. While this is quite endearing, it makes for a much longer feeding. He is getting more and more distracted by things, loves looking outside, at things on the walls, at his mobile, at his toys. Oh, and he grasped something other than our hands the other day, with some assistance. We opened his little fist and put a teether/rattle in it and then let it go. He moved it around a bit before letting it go.
Here are some photos of Griff after a bath. I love the curls he has when his hair is wet!
