Chinese Lunar New Year Parade SF

Why was this the first year I have ever been to the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade in San Francisco? It is SPECTACULAR! We went up on a whim and were so glad we did. We took BART (BIG highlight for Griff...it is like a subway train) up a few hours before the parade and wandered around, scouting the parade route, finding something to eat, and seeing some of the dragon and lion costumes up close. We will definitely try to make it a tradition in our family!

We found one group getting ready down a little alley. Griff got to see the performers and touch the costumes, which I think helped him to understand what was going on during the parade. We read some books about some of the Lunar New Year traditions, so we would all understand what was going on, why all the noise and the lions and dragons.

There were firecrackers and really loud drums and cymbals being played all day, so we were super-glad we had borrowed a friend's daughter's noise-reducing headphones. We have since gotten him a pair of his own (an orange pair, his favorite color!) and he loves to wear them, especially when I vacuum.
This was the silliest part of the parade, a huge shopping cart that was completely souped out! This thing roared when the driver stepped on the gas, and, as you can see, the steering wheel is in the kiddie seat in the cart!
