2 Weeks!

I can't believe it has already been 2 weeks since Larkin was born!  Holy toledo!  It has been a whirlwind, not quite as restful as with Griff, but wonderful.  Learning to function caring for 2 is a challenge, but one I am happy taking on.  Griff has been a trooper and shown nothing but love for his little sister.  And speaking of, I hear her beginning to stir, so this will be short.

Here is Griff the morning after his accident at the pizza restaurant. He woke up and said "Daddy, my face is broken."  So so sad, but 2 weeks on he is healing really well, the cut almost completely healed and so much smaller than it looked originally.  He will need to wear sunscreen and a band-aid for about 6 months to protect it from the sun to minimize the scarring, but I think it will be pretty minimal.  Yaaa for our bodies healing!  Speaking of, 2 weeks on and I am wearing my regular clothes again (good bye front-panel maternity pants and tent shirts!) and feeling pretty good, much better than after my first birth.

Griff and Pammaw made an old-fashioned telephone.  Griff has a great time calling everyone in the house on it.
Farmer Griff.  Darrell and Griffin readied these two bins for a little garden (planting in the ground is useless as the gophers are numerous and definitely don't limit themselves to gaining access to plants via underground routes).  Measuring by the mud coverage to child surface ratio, they had a great time!

A de-mudded Griff proudly holding his little sister.  You might notice the bright red patches on my chest, that is mastitis trying to set in.  Our glorious, amazing, knowledgeable post-partum midwife helped me fight it using vitamins, herbs, and ginger compresses; no antibiotics followed by thrush for momma and baby this time.  If you are thinking about having a baby, I highly recommend a post-partum midwife or doula.  I wish we had decided to hire someone with knowledge on healing moms and keeping babies healthy and happy with Griff; it would have saved all of us so much agony.  But our previous experience definitely convinced me to hire someone this time.  And to accept help this time from Pammaw, Grandma Sue, Giselle, Nic, Noella, Andrea, Sandy, Betsy, and everyone who has made us a meal.  All the support has made the transition so much easier. We are so very thankful!

Darrell, Grandma Sue, Steely, and Griff take a trip to Elkhorn Slough Reserve
Last weekend, while Larkin and I rested, they all piled into the car and went for a trip to Elkhorn Slough Reserve.  Here Griff is spotting some wildlife with his binoculars.

A student group was seining for sculpins and the kids got to see them.
Hanging out in the barn after looking for food the barn owls had eaten; they found some bones of little rodents and were pretty excited about it.
Smooth, comfy ride, especially when your legs are tired and you are too big to be carried anymore.
Senor Explorer at work!
Larkin at 2 weeks, so alert and excited to see her world.  She is much less sleepy, which means she is also having a tougher time going to sleep.  She seems to prefer falling asleep on someone's chest, a step up from only falling asleep while nursing.  She seems to be getting a little more fussy, I think she gets frustrated when she can't do something fairly easily.  And she seems to want to do things herself, she is holding up her big noggin for about 30 seconds at a time now and attempting to roll to her preferred position on her side.  True to the meaning of her name, she is little but fierce!  Nina and Ayla came for a visit yesterday (thanks for the pic, Nina), and she kept calling Larkin "he" because she looks so much like Griff when he was a baby.  Larkin is definitely using her voice, she is constantly making noise even when she is sleeping.  I think it is partly self-soothing, but also a good amount of working things through her newly-minted digestive system.  The baby monitor doesn't tell us much about whether she is awake or asleep.  I am taking little videos of her noises and at some point I will post a little composite of her various noises.  Some of them are really sweet and some are pretty darn silly.  Love that little one!
