Epic Week

This has been a epic week.  Epic on a number of fronts and for a number of reasons.

First, Darrell took a position at a school in Carmel.  It is a wonderful opportunity that will allow him a lot of creativity and growth.  The school has an incredible organic garden and nature preserve on site and he will help to develop curriculum with other teachers to utilize the garden and habitat, along with teaching some classes of his own.  I am so proud and excited for him!  I, on the other hand, am still not finished with my dissertation, so our current thought is that we will stay in Santa Cruz until I finish (shooting for December), where I have access to advisers and we have solid care for Griff already worked out.  I am not keen on Darrell commuting, and we will definitely move down that way as soon as we can.

Secondly, this week has been epic in the friend category for Griff.  Griff has had a nice set of wonderful friends who are children of our friends, and we are lucky that they all seem to get along so well.  I have a very microscopic view of Griff, and it is nice to have another viewpoint with a broader perspective.  We had parent-teacher conferences this week and the teachers said something that was very relieving and familiar to me about him.  They said when a kid he is playing with at preschool starts to get bossy or lose their temper or have a break-down of some sort or another, that "you can almost see the thought bubble forming above his head as he observes them saying 'what's the problem?' and then he moves on to something else while the person gets ahold of themselves."  He doesn't get upset or worked up, he just seems to think, "well you aren't much fun right now, so I will give you a little space and go over here an play something else for awhile."  Sound like anyone you know?  Definitely not me when I was Griff's age!  That is Darrell's calmness and sensitivity to others shining though.  I love that quality in Darrell, and I love to see it serving Griff so well with his budding friendships.  So, on that note, he has been building some very sweet friendships with kids at preschool, too.  I posted about a visit from his friend Leif on Thursday.  On Friday we had an impromptu visit from his friend Wyatt from the same preschool.  They played wonderfully all day, not a conflict.

On Saturday evening we went to visit our friends Nima and Giselle and their kids, Samaya and Kalden.  Griff and Kalden had a great time together and it is exciting that they will be at preschool together next year.

And on Sunday, after swimming, we went to Savi's birthday party where Griff and Ayla had a great time playing together again.
